Slaves of our feelings

In canoe slalom, and I think in every sport, we depend a lot on our feelings. It can even determine our state of mind.

Allright but, is this relationship between feelings and performance reliable? We've seen through times that a bad feelings run can still be a good run although lot of paddlers use it as an evaluation for good or bad. I don't mean it's not a performance indicator, but it can't be the only one.

Gliding and propulsion
There is sports where movement is all about gliding (most water, ice, snow sports) and others that were is simply based on propulsion (all earth sports without wheels). Ours however, combine both so even if the boat didn't glide as expected, maybe there were a good propulsion, so the final amount of movement has been the same. When the magic is not present, suffering (as pushing hard) is needed. A paddler can't be a magician all the time, so sometimes has to turn into a hard worker.

Reminding feelings
Something that bothers me about feeling, or at least about its evaluation, is that is made through comparison with previous experiences. "I feel that I didn't glide that much, as I recall my boat gliding much more doing the same". It's something way too abstract. How can I remember about sensation, about the subtle gliding of the boat tail through water? That has actually a simple explanation: kinaesthetics and proprioception, the perception of the body motion and position. Through this receptors we are constantly receiving information about it and updating our position. So, we anticipate gliding.

How to work it out
Here is where whitewater makes sense. The more experiences in water, the better. These experiences create our 'sensations library', so that allow us to anticipate actions and evaluate them. We can even boost it using equipment transference, which consists in paddling with adapted material in order to get modified feeling and stimulate this receptor. Anyway, every one of these exercises should be followed by practicing again with the actual material, so the receptors get to know why we are doing that. It can be done with smaller blades, changing boat's shape to create more water friction, water inside the boat...  Just one more warning: don't mix different transferences, one at a time. Don't mess with the receptors.
