For once, I want to imagine a situation where the time left for a race only passes if something that'll help on the result is being done. Not just being on a training, but doing something with actual meaning. Then, and only then, the days remaining for the race will count down. If nothing helpful is being done, the race never comes.
That may sound silly, but it is something actually practiced on daily training. Working out (or not working out, for that matter) knowing that racing will eventually came, no matter what is being done for it. Then 'what if' regrets come. Those regrets doesn't follow classic commercial rules, fair interchange rules. Crossing the finish line and see that the olympic medal is just one second away makes anybody think that they could give everything for that simple second. However, that second previously had a completely different value: by simply doing any little thing at hand, to get closer to the goals. Something that in that moment had little value, one could pay a high price later seeing the results.
If time didn't pass for those not doing something significative for their improvement, at least everybody would get to the race with the feeling that nothing more could have been done. And this should be the most important goal of every athlete. Because it's the only thing that an athlete can control, make every moment count and get to the start with the peace of mind that whatever the result, there is no regrets about what could have been done.
